The discovery Heritage

Since January 10, 2008, the valleys of the Aure and are labeled Louron Country of Art and History.

The label Country of Art and History aims to safeguard and promote the heritage, the first to animate the telling, making available all the history and culture of our valleys.

The country of Art and History allows audiences (residents, second homes, young and visitors) to discover and understand each of the valleys and villages, to exchange and share their heritage in 3 areas:

- The natural heritage and landscape

- The architectural, civil and religious

- The heritage of know-how.

The Pastorale du Tourisme and the Foyer Culturel encourage visitors to discover the artistic and religious heritage of Saint-Lary and the Valley, by organising visits to Romanesque churches, exhibitions, concerts and conferences.
In the centre of Saint-Lary village, the Tour Hachan, which houses the National Park Museum, and the adjacent buildings (now the Town Hall and municipal buildings) have been beautifully restored and in Saint-Lary the "Old village" now displays a combination of wood, stone and slate.
Its mullioned windows are a carbon copy of those found on the Tour Hachan

The Mill Debate 17th century, today it is the vestige of the agro-pastoral activities and traces the history of former millers and milling of Saint Lary Soulan visit free for individuals. Opening times: Every Tuesday and Friday from 15h to 16h. 1 hour guided tour. Free tours for individuals.

The Church of Saint-Bertrand located in the heart of village built in 1950. The church made of concrete, has a single nave with side pillars. The altar and the tabernacle was covered with bricks. the parsonage next to the church Saint-Bertrand complete with a gardener, maintained and flourished in the town.

The village Soulan peaks at 1280m altitude. For centuries, the community lived almost only resource of livestock. In 1876, the village had 167 inhabitants. In 1963, Soulan which then had more than 38 inhabitants, was merged with Saint-Lary, allowing the creation of a road to ski slopes of the Pla d'Adet and Espiaube and the ski development. ..

 

 

 

 

 

Pastoralism

The Rioumajou valley is home to 200 cows and 1500 sheep from traditional breeding farms, which produce very good quality meat sold in the butchers' shops of Saint-Lary.
The animals maintain the mountain environment through grazing.
The transhumance with its festivities is a high spot of valley life for the shepherds and the locals

 

The Route of St. James

As described by Caesar, the Chemin de la Ténarèze has linked Aquitaine to the Ebre plain from time immemorial via the cols of Rioumajou. The three hospices of Aragnouet, Rioumajou and Agos witnessed the passage of the pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela; From Tramezaygues, the latter passed into Spain, either through the Rioumajou valley, or through the Saux valley and Bielsa harbour
